we have one of these! The BAC in Manitou was conceived of as an arts incubator, modeled after the torpedo factory and other arts incubators on the east coast. you could point out many differences between the KC and the Manitou versions (KC has that grungy authenticity, BAC is a little more sanitized). I would argue the main difference is the leadership and their intentions, and community support. having recently visited KC, I feel I can say there is definitely more support for the arts in Kansas than here. With the BAC on the cusp of closure or greatness, it would be amazing to get someone in there that could really kick out the jams. The artists are here, the space is there, what it needs is money and leadership.
Amen! As far as I can tell the BAC focuses on preparing artists for arts and crafts markets and not so much for the greater art world. Actually, they seem to focus more on being an incubator for not-for-profits and they happen to provide studio and workshop space for artists. I’m not aware of any other kind of guidance that they give artists. I think that’s fine, but I think we also need something that gets artists some national and international recognition and can help with concept, theory, marketing, art making, websites, networking, portfolios, resumes, etc. Heaven knows, most art schools don’t do that. They teach them how to render a plant and a sphere and then kick them out into the world.
