    GoCA Mixtape 1

I’m on my way to New York for the Armory/Whitney/Volta/Pulse/Scope/Bridge/art overload. If I find some time, I’ll post some of my experiences. In the meanwhile, enjoy some tunes – nothing too advanced, just the basics.

    1. Mar-Tie / Desert Storm

      • Mar-Tie is my favorite of all the chemically imbalanced musicians. I met him when I worked at a movie theater during my undergraduate years. He would come in for the air conditioning and we’d let him watch the movies for free. To show his appreciation, he would play us songs on his little Casio keyboard and record us cassettes. I still have three of them.
    2. Thee More Shallows / Night at the Knight School
    3. Deerhoof / Milking
      • Satomi Matsuzaki is the perfect front-woman for this band. She prances around like she has little (ahem) deer hooves.
    4. Metric / Monster Hospital
    5. Portishead / Wandering Star (Live)
    6. School of Language / Rockist Part 1
    7. DeVotchKa / Transliterator

That’s right. They’re from Denver. Stick with the home team.

    8. Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton / Our Hell
    9. Sleater-Kinney / One Beat
    10. Public Enemy / Fight the Power
    11. Fugazi / Hello Morning
    12. Red Bennies / I’m Coming Home
    13. Slint / Nosferatu Man
    14. Iceburn / Burn
      • I grew up listening to a Utah favorite, Iceburn. I felt like reliving some of the metal-esqe goodness.

    1. Iceburn rocks, thanks for a blast from the past. Saw them in concert at the Bluebird in Denver in the 90’s, rawk!

    2. While I was in New York, I did a studio visit in DUMBO with an artist who had an Iceburn record on vinyl. It still cracks me up that people outside Utah knew and remember them.

In the exhibition American Places William Wylie focuses on the concept of place; how we respond to the landscape, how we move from the general to the specific in our personal associations with it, and how our lives are interwoven into the histories of places.
