DIY University

Thursday, April 26, 7:00 p.m.

The Gallery of Contemporary Art, UCCS presents DIY University (DIYU), an unaccredited pseudo-college housed within the Gallery.

DIY University provides a loose framework through which participants create, discuss, and collaborate in designing curriculum, presentations, and situations for acting and reacting. DIYU seeks to test and promote modes of teaching and learning that traditional avenues of education neglect. DIYU “classes” can include experimental lectures, film viewings, critiques, studio visits, brainstorming sessions, jogging tours, or garage sales. Participants take turns planning and leading the “classes.”

The do-it-yourself phenomenon boomed in the 1950’s and 60’s with kits, magazines, and books encouraging people to be self-reliant rather than dependent upon goods and services from professionals. Home and car repair, interior decorating, music recording and distribution, publishing, and crafts have all been part of the DIY ethic. DIY University relies on the assumption that each member within a group of individuals will be able to share his/her professional or amateur interests to benefit that group. The concerns and skills of the students/teachers will determine the direction of the University.

Registration for DIY University is unnecessary and there is no tuition or initial activity fees. DIYU is open to the public and has no full-time faculty. The University is not accredited and has no aspirations to become accredited. DIYU will most likely not help you get a job.

For this event, parking will be free in lots 3 and 4.

Update (04.27.07): For those of you who weren’t able to attend Orientation, you’re in luck. We recorded the whole thing so you can catch up with the rest of the class by the time we hold DIYU again (that is yet to be determined). You have two options for your listening/viewing pleasure:

  1. Audio with slide/show just as if you were there last night / iTunes AAC file (30.6MB)
  2. Audio with no images / MP3 (22.85MB)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
